Best Luxury Hair Bonnet

If you're prone to tossing and turning at night—and you don't own a silk pillowcase—a silk bonnet will keep your hair in healthy shape by preventing tangles and breakage that could be caused by friction. If your headscarf always seems to disappear in the middle of the night, look no further than this popular bonnet from Tgin. Its secure, extra wide band is designed to stay in place, but is also flexible enough to prevent a dreaded forehead line. No matter if you have short or long hair, braids or extensions, this cap really helps to keep all your hair smooth and evenly slicked.

Grace Eleyae Slap

A bonnet that's comfortable AND stays put throughout the night is a win. This one is made using 100 percent silk, and it's meant to help the hair retain moisture from serums and treatments overnight. This miniature piece will do wonders for a developing child’s hair growth. Bald spots where your baby sleeps are usually considered a simple part of life, but by reducing friction with this charmeuse satin bonnet, you can give your child’s hair a chance to grow no matter how they sleep.

Plus, you can easily adjust the level of tightness around the band using the drawstring. It is a truth universally acknowledged that those with textured and natural hair types live in fear of their bonnet falling off during a good night's sleep. Kidding (kinda) but no one wants to go through all the work of putting their hair up, wrapping or pineappling it, and then waking up in the morning, well-rested but also serving Beetlejuice hair. Despite what Hollywood would have you think, textured hair needs an extra level of protection, and going to bed without some kind of silk hair wrap, cap, or bonnet is a one-way ticket to dry, tangled hair.

Best Silk Hair Wraps, Caps, and Bonnets to Elevate Your Beauty Sleep Routine

Whereas silk is a natural fiber created from silkworms, so it tends to be more expensive (and even softer). Its extra large fit protects almost any hairstyle, from big ringlet curls and blowouts, to high ponytails and elegant updos. And thanks to the snug headband, it stays pretty secure no matter how much you toss and turn at night. These fabrics are naturally soft and less absorbent, and thus won't strip your hair of its moisture or create friction. If you're a fan of Pattern's beauty award-winning products, then you'll definitely love this cap that's made with high-quality, double-lined black satin to keep short and medium-length curls in top shape overnight. The thick yet non-abrasive elastic keeps the bonnet secured to your head for long nights while protecting your edges and fitting to a wide range of head sizes.

Best Hair Bonnet For Outdoor Wear

It’s thin in texture and can be tied down in different ways on your head, similar to a durag. The satin material also helps to smooth out your hair and keep it from getting tangled. Most people, including Taylor, prefer to use ones made of silk, since they made me a little more gentle and moisturizing.

It’s also pretty soft and glides gently against your hair, thanks to the 19 momme charmeuse silk. Just keep in mind, the cap is on the small side, so you may need to pin your hair up to get full coverage. “All hair types can benefit from a bonnet, but it’s most used for curly and coily hair types to help protect and strengthen the natural curl patterns,” explains Taylor. They're also fantastic for fighting breakage, which are problems that those with textured hair tend to face often.

Best No-Slip Hair Bonnet

For the price (less than $5!), it's hard to beat this eye-catching Evolve bonnet. "It fits well, not too tight and doesn't come off at night. I love the quality and design. Also, there's no dye transfer to my linens like I experienced with other bonnets." In addition to plenty of space, this hair bonnet also has a wider edge than most to keep your baby hairs in place. This wide-edge satin bonnet comes in a large size to accommodate longer lengths and thicker textures, and the band is wide enough to gently sit on the edges without pulling or being too tight.

Most Affordable Hair Bonnet

The adjustable strap is also handy when you need to make more room in the bonnet. These ultra-plush satin bonnets are about as soft as it gets, so you can feel as good as you look in them. There are plenty of styles to choose from, and each print has a different meaning. This one, in particular, is honorably named after the famous city in northern Mali.

We especially love that it comes in multiple sizes, including for toddlers. The small and medium sizes are great for TWAs, pixie cuts, and maintaining wash and go’s, while the large size can hold long twists, locs, and braids. All bonnets by Cee Cee's Closet, a brand founded by Chioma and Uchenna Ngwudo in New York City, are handmade in Nigeria.

That said, satin bonnets work just as well, and may also be more affordable in some cases. An adjustable bonnet is ideal for those who have longer or thicker hair, and have a hard time using one that doesn’t stretch big enough. This one is made to create a friction-free barrier for all hair types, and will help reduce tangles and breakage.

"This is the only bonnet I repurchase over and over again," says Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab analyst, Jodhaira Rodriguez. "It stays on through the night even when I move around a lot while I sleep, but isn’t uncomfortably tight and actually holds all my hair." Fans of Slip's coveted silk pillowcases will enjoy tucking their hair into this bonnet version from the brand that's double-lined with the frizz fighting material. You won't have to worry about waking up with unsightly forehead lines after wearing this comfy sleep bonnet from Kitsch. It's made with stretchy jersey fabric for maximum comfort, but lined with satin to minimize frizz and friction as you snooze. If you like to wear your bonnet while running errands, this sleep cap is a stylish pick.

Made from entirely from mulberry silk, this luxe bonnet makes it easy to elevate your bedtime look, and helps lock in shine and moisture as you snooze. This vibrant beauty essential is cute enough to dress up with a pair of jeans and sling backs, yet practical enough to keep curls and fine hair safe and secure in the middle of the night. This option suits longer hairstyles; instead of having to stuff the hair into a bonnet of a smaller size, this one features extended fabric that'll allow your hair to hang.

Plus, bonnets lock in any products that you use on your hair before bed, which means that they actually absorb into your hair, not your pillowcase. Whether you have slightly curly hair or ultra-tight coils, a silk hair cover should definitely be part of your bedtime wardrobe. No matter which satin or silk sleep cap you decide to grab, you can elevate your hair care routine with these buttery-smooth options.

13 Best Bonnets To Protect Hair While Sleeping

hair cap for sleeping

This 100 percent mulberry silk bonnet is light, breathable, and the perfect size to protect shorter strands without all the extra fabric. Aside from the luxurious silk, our favorite feature is that it has an adjustable ribbon so that you can tie your sleep cap to your desired tightness to keep it in place all night long. In addition to helping to preserve hair styles for a longer period of time, the best hair bonnets also minimize frizz and prevent hair snags while you sleep. They're usually available with either silk or satin fabric, which is beneficial in helping hair retain moisture and shine.

The Best Bonnets To Sleep in To Fight Frizz and Wake Up With Easy-To-Style Hair

If you want to extend the life of your blowout or protective style, this satin bonnet is the perfect fit—literally. It’s specifically designed to hold braids, dreadlocks, curly hair, or any voluminous hair style. Additionally, the double layer of satin helps to reduce friction and breakage, so that you don’t wake up with bed head the next day.

Grow Gorgeous Overnight Hair Wrap

Satin bonnets and headwraps can certainly get the job done, but nothing is quite as effective at retaining moisture than silk. Silke is one maker of functional silky headpieces that are pretty enough to be worn everywhere. When brand founder Maria Sotiriou was experiencing split ends and breakage, she looked back to her Caribbean heritage to remember the importance of covering your hair at night.

Best Hair Bonnet For Outdoor Wear

We conducted hours of research, evaluating the bonnets on this list on their material, color selection, sizing, and overall quality. Made with 100 percent mulberry silk, this bonnet feels like you’re sleeping on a cloud. It’s incredibly soft and perfect for protecting your hair from breakage as you sleep. The headband gently presses against your forehead, but can be tightly fastened with the ribbons in the back to keep the bonnet in place. And when it gets dirty, just toss it into the wash and you’re go to go. Bonnets are typically made of silk, and thus, can protect your strands from damage and frizz that may occur as a result of tossing and turning against cotton pillowcases at night.

Best All-Around Hair Bonnet

While the pricier bonnets on this list are made of pure silk, many options are still super soft and under $25. You will want to look for a bonnet for natural hair that will hold all of your hair. If you have shorter hair, a long bonnet might get caught and be pulled off of your head, so choose a smaller size that suits you. Our best overall pick is the Grace Eleyae All Silk Turban, which is adjustable, made of pure silk, and boasts a luxurious skin feel. For a more affordable pick, consider the Kitsch Satin Sleep Cap also helps keep hair smooth and frizz-free. Made with 100 percent African cotton print on the outside and satin lining on the inside, it gets two thumbs up for both form and function.

You’ll also want a comfortable one that doesn’t dig into your head. One great alternative is to choose an adjustable bonnet for natural hair. Many adjustable bonnets come with a drawstring or tie feature to help keep hair in place, like the Glow by Daye Satin Bonnet.

If there is anyone who knows how to keep their curls frizz-free and full of volume, it’s Tracee Ellis Ross. The bonnet, which is an offering from her beauty brand Pattern Beauty, works as a breathable and protective cover for rod sets, loose hair, locks, braids, wash-and-gos and more. “It also allows the hair to keep its natural oils and prevents frizz and dehydration,” Nussbaum adds. However, both satin and silk bonnets can provide the same amount of protection for your hair. The only real difference tends to be in the price and how each fabric is made. Satin is a human-made fiber that weaves from other materials like nylon or polyester.

If you're looking to protect your natural hairstyle, silk and satin hair caps for sleeping are a staple to have in your arsenal. Sleep caps reduce friction between your hair and pillow while you sleep, which keeps curls defined and hydrated, protects hair from split ends and shields against frizz. Hair caps are great for women with extremely dry hair since they help to lock in moisture, says Kiyah Wright, a celebrity hairstylist in Beverly Hills, California. While solutions like silk pillowcases can help, silk hair caps for sleeping go the extra mile by fully encasing your hair, keeping friction to a minimum.

Kitsch Satin Sleep Cap

It also works for a variety of head sizes thanks to a silk-covered elastic band. Bonnets for natural hair are typically worn at night, so it’s vital you choose one that fits well and will stay in place. This means they need to be tight enough to fit your head without coming off if you twist and turn.

"I love this bonnet so much I bought it in two colors. It stays on my head without being tight or leaving indentations like traditional bonnets. Easy to wash and is holding up well." Carlos C. Whether you have tons of voluminous curls or looking to keep a braid out frizz-free, this roomy adjustable, Bridgerton-inspired bonnet works for just about any hair style. It also features a pair of ties for a secure hold, no matter how many times you may toss and turn during the night. I can't exactly pinpoint when I first started sleeping in hair scarves and bonnets at night, but I can say they're still very much undefeated for holding down my curls, braids, and blowouts with expert precision.

If you’re feeling a bit indecisive, this bonnet comes in plenty of patterns and colors, and it has two wearable sides so you can switch things up to get the most out of your sleepwear. It’s also adjustable with a drawstring and made of high-grade double-layered satin for increased durability that the brand swears by, with a one-year guarantee. Okay, so we’re not going to act like this is a new trend; this is totally a durag, but we love this chic satin charmeuse take on the classic sleep accessory. Retain moisture, reduce breakage, and wake up with your hair laid. We find that this piece is ideal for wrapping medium-length straight hair or protecting cornrows and other sleek styles. This pure silk bonnet from Silke London doesn't just feel luxurious — it also looks sophisticated and chic.

"I was looking for something to preserve braids. This is a great, lightweight option. Cozy, comfy, not too tight." There's nothing more annoying than securing your strands at night, only to wake up to your sleep cap on one side of the bed and a tousled head of hair that went unprotected at some point in the night. This sleep cap has a wide edge that lays flat against your head all-night long so it won't slip and slide.

Auburn Hair-Color Ideas and Inspiration For Every Style

aburn hair

Located minutes from the ocean, Ohm feels like a friend's beach house. Synclare questioned us about how we hoped our highlights would look, asking if we had chunky and dramatic or wispy and subtle in mind. She then proceeded to weave two different shades—a pale caramel and a pumped-up champagne—into our hair.

Perfect Auburn Hairstyles on Celebrities

There’s pretty much no style she has yet to try, and her mission is to help everyone find the perfect look they seek. When Andy is not gushing about hairstyles, she spends most of her time reading through her giant collection of sci-fi books or watching old Star Trek shows. First and foremost, it’s important to remember that every head of hair is unique. Depending on the current state and condition of your hair – as well as its natural texture – the process can vary greatly when transitioning from one shade or hue to another.

Deep Wine Auburn Hair

This style actually works well for people without a ton of hair density. One of our iconic redheads, Amy Adams is a pro by now at styling her hair. This thick braid is pretty standard, so the color is what keeps things interesting. The braid's height allows for a better view of its vibrancy and depth—it shows off the color, in other words, while still being out of her face.

Plum auburn can be described as having "a violet tone to it and is overall a deeper auburn," Sanger says. This shade can look almost chocolate brown in some lighting because its red tones are less fiery and more subtle. Some of my worst bullies later cultivated curly locks (one became a bouncy-haired mime) while within ten years half were balding. My hair went on to garner compliments from strangers in the street, blessings in India from mothers holding infants and fascination from those I encountered in Africa and Asia. And it was my hair that drew men with lascivious intent – many men’s hands have clawed its thick, slightly matted curls, fascinated and delighted. Most of my boyfriends have said it was my hair that drew them to me.

Auburn Red, a mesmerizing blend of red and brown pigments, offers a warm and earthy palette. The spectrum ranges from deep burgundy to light copper, providing endless possibilities for a personalized style that stands out. The distinctive warmth and depth set Auburn Red apart from traditional reds, making it an exciting choice for those seeking a bold statement. Choosing your perfect auburn means determining whether your skin undertones are warm, cool, or neutral. In general, you want to choose a color that shares your undertones.

Additionally, if you have gray strands the color will help blend them as they'll transform into strawberry blonde highlights. To take your blonde a bit darker for the chilly season, add warm, auburn lowlights for dimension and depth. Ask your colorist for auburn lowlights blended throughout your hair to deepen your blonde color with a season-friendly twist. Just like any other hair color, there are different shades and levels of auburn. Here, Karen Gillan opts for a brown dye with red-gold undertones instead of a more fiery and undulating red shade. It's always a good idea to bring in photos and examples of the shade you're going for so you can avoid any miscommunication or disappointment in the end.

Bright Ginger-Toned Auburn

The coppery effect brings a soft shimmer to this dark chocolate color bringing a rich and natural looking glow. This naturally blended ombre embraces this streams of chestnut blended in dark brunette roots and extends into glowing ribbons of honey blonde. It makes for a pretty hairstyle with everyday functionality–maintaining the balance between dark and light which can cause the skin’s tone and appearance to become washed out.

One of the keys to a look like this is moisture, so we advise investing in a gloss to help preserve and boost the color. If you do decide to make the jump and go for something brighter, Mileti recommends staying away from too much color at the roots. He says it's the make-or-break habit to dyeing your hair with a red undertone. "I always remind my clients that auburn is a commitment and proper products are paramount," says Mileti. Sticking to color-preserving products can double the longevity and vibrancy of hair color, thanks to the oil and peptides found inside.

Turn up the heat by adding dimension and elegance to your brunette locks. Sophisticated copper hues are such an excellent solution when it comes to a light auburn hair color and nonchalant beach waves. If your skin tone is not very light, you are likely to look better with medium or dark auburn shades. They add a fresh and shiny pop of color and are bound to turn heads. Auburn hair looks bright and catchy on itself, but blonde highlights can add more visual depth and luminosity to your mane, making it a real stun! The red pigments of this color increase your locks’ vibrancy while maintaining a natural appeal.

Thick but not overwhelming, they highlight the natural look of the style. A trendy and cute hairstyle for girls or a cool and casual style for women–this look is practical and achievable. Best of all, proving curls aren’t just for long hair–now you can achieve the pretty look with a shorter cut. A touch of golden highlights with natural auburn hair make these ringlets pop with bouncy motion and finesse.

Ultra-dimensional, this gilded auburn shade catches the light like stained glass and reflects many hues. With hints of shining gold, rich brown, and glittering ginger-orange red, this shade is always a stunner. Nothing says fall like rich, warm shades of copper, caramel, honey, and chestnut, so keep scrolling for more auburn hair-color ideas and inspiration. Plus, you don't have to worry about your auburn color fading in the sun since this wig is made of high-quality fibers that will keep its vibrant hue no matter what!

The soft curls on this longer a-line cut bring a natural finish and a cute easy auburn hair style for any occasion. Those with dark strands will find that sometimes their hair can look reddish in bright light. Enhance the effect by dyeing your ends in varying shades of medium red and strawberry blonde. Brighten up your complexion by dyeing your auburn hair with warm undertones and a touch of gold for a fresh and casual look.

You can still rock your black strands while getting in on the auburn hair color trend. Ask your colorist for a black auburn hue, which features the rich black shade mixed with subtle tones of red and brown for an auburn twist. Sort of like black cherry hair, it’s a super-wearable version of the auburn trend thanks to the darker colors woven into the mix. Ladies with African American hair should embrace auburn color with full enthusiasm – red hair, especially deeper hues, look amazing on women with darker skin tones. Auburn is universally flattering, and adds a layer of richness to any hairstyle. Although both chestnut and auburn hair have red undertones, chestnut and auburn hair colors are distinctly different.

This light auburn hair color style is all about showcasing a healthy blend of wavy tangles and soft supple curls. This sunny chestnut windblown style paired with an awesome golden blonde ombre is best for any season and a great option for light to medium skin tones. As an alternative to a common auburn hair color, you can try inserting chunky caramel highlights against a contrasting dark brown with a plum red undertone. This works perfectly with brown eyes and medium skin tones, adding warmth and a touch of sophistication to the overall look. Take a peek at this spectacular transformation of light auburn hair color to dark.

Because it’s nothing to find a number of highly sought after Herman Miller accessories hiding in their sales section, among other furniture items that could fit into an art gallery as easily as they can a personal living space. Architects, interior designers, and the general public responded immediately, and to our surprise, so did the brands that Rob had struggled to get his hands on just months earlier. One of the first brands to appreciate our approach was the Michigan-based company Herman Miller. Within a year of launching, we were bringing the Eames Lounge Chair, Aeron Chair, and many other Herman Miller favorites directly to retail customers across the country via catalog – for the first time ever. In my senior show exhibit, I intend to highlight the intersection of graphic design and sports marketing, focusing specifically on the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the NASCAR industry. Through a series of dynamic and visually engaging posters and a custom-designed card deck, I aim to demonstrate how graphic design can play a pivotal role in capturing the excitement, energy and brand identity of NASCAR. By showcasing my work in this niche area, I hope to shed light on the vast potential of graphic design beyond traditional boundaries, illustrating its ability to thrive in diverse contexts and industries.

Proventus will only sell upgrades while actually inside Dragonsreach. If he is on the Great Porch or his bedroom, the option to decorate your house will not be available. Breezehome will be the first of many houses a player will be able to purchase in Skyrim but unlike other houses, this one is made available to you through the main quest. Once a player has completed the prerequisites for other homes, the same exploit used for Breezehome can be utilized to get the same results.

To purchase the home, you must first complete the Bleak Falls Barrow quest for the Jarl of Whiterun. Upon completion he will permit you to purchase the house from Proventus Avenicci for 5,000 gold. The total cost of the house (including all upgrades) is 6,800 gold, or 6,550 gold if you have Hearthfire installed and choose to forgo the alchemy laboratory in favor of a children's bedroom. Whiterun is the first city where the player can purchase a house when following the main quest.

The house is located just a stone's throw from the fast travel point and the city's main gate, and is right next to the local shops and forge. Add to that the ability to buy an Alchemy Lab and the Arcane Enchanter in Dragonsreach, and you have everything you need for crafting within one city. Breezehome is the first home offered to you during the main quest. Breezehome is the cheapest house available for purchase in Skyrim, but it is also the only house in Skyrim that does not have an arcane enchanter. Each house also allows you to upgrade and furnish each domicile for a small fee, and with the advent of the Hearthfire expansion, allows you to own additional plots of land and build your own, too.

There is also a room in the loft for the player's housecarl, Lydia, to stay in. You will receive the key to Breezehome & the said house can be found just beside Warmaiden’s by the gate at Whiterun. Head deeper inside the ruin & you will come across a group of pillars which you will need to set to “snake,” “snake,” “whale,” and this will let you pull the lever and continue. If having the best weather is your top priority, January, February and early March offer the best weather during the dry season with low humidity — but it's also the most expensive time to travel to the region. Take advantage of the final weeks of the dry season to book active outdoor adventure excursions like hiking, kayaking and zip lining. Another option is the Rainforest and Aerial Tram tour to the Gamboa Rainforest Resort in the 55,000-acre Soberania National Park.

For a one-way Panama Canal transit that visits six countries (Aruba, Curacao, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Mexico) and offers six relaxing and luxurious days at sea, consider Seabourn's 21-day Caribbean & Panama Canal Passage. The 450-guest Seabourn Sojourn will sail from Miami to Los Angeles in December. For a Panama Canal experience that begins and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Celebrity Cruises' 11-night Panama Canal & Southern Caribbean itinerary is a great option. There's plenty of time to plan ahead for the Dec. 2, 2024 cruise or the half-dozen almost identical sailings that follow through March 2025. All sailings are aboard the new 3,260-guest Celebrity Beyond and visit Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama; Oranjestad, Aruba; Kralendjik, Bonaire; and George Town, Grand Cayman (Willemstad, Curacao replaces Grand Cayman on some 2025 sailings).

This is a good time to grab lunch, take a dip in the pool or just relax for a bit. On a full-transit Panama Canal cruise, the ship enters the first set of locks (usually from the Atlantic Ocean side, as most cruises originate from there or the Caribbean). It then travels through Gatun Lake and the other sets of locks to exit the canal on the Pacific side. For the ultimate cruise indulgence, Viking's 180-day World Voyage I includes a Panama Canal transit (on Christmas Day, no less) as 930-passenger Viking Sky cruises from Fort Lauderdale to New York City (Dec. 19, 2024–June 17, 2025). This round-the-world cruise will visit 37 countries as guests enjoy Viking Sky's modern Scandinavian interior decor, soothing LivNordic Spa, two pools (including one with a retractable roof) and six onboard restaurants. Pricing includes airfare, gratuities and complimentary wine and beer with lunch and dinner.

These itineraries include stops in Fuerte Amador, providing a comprehensive exploration of the lock system and access to Panama City. The Ocean-to-Ocean journeys can be taken between Los Angeles or San Francisco and Fort Lauderdale, or vice versa. All of these itineraries involve sailing through the historic locks of the Panama Canal. There are so many fabulous encounters with nature available from this port, you'll have a hard time deciding on a shore excursion. A visit to the Tabacon Resort Hot Springs takes you to the slopes of the active Arenal volcano.

Don't be surprised if people start grabbing spots in the predawn hours in the best viewing areas. If you want a front-row view of the action, you'll probably have to do the same. Despite the early start, you'll want to be prepared for the Panama sun, as it can get surprisingly hot while you're out there waiting.

You can also stand on the ground-level terrace or grab a seat in the bleachers on the first level to watch ships pass through the final set of locks; sometimes, a staff member is on hand to provide commentary. Since the crossing does take a while, especially sailing across Gatun Lake, you might find it fun to watch it from a different vantage point from time to time. You can enjoy views from a hot tub on one of the decks, from your table at lunch or even from a deck that's aft, so you can see the locks after you leave them instead of when you arrive. And even though the crossing is fascinating, let's be honest — it can also be tedious.

Passengers often choose an Atlantic to Pacific or Pacific to Atlantic route, depending on where they live, although you'll gain hours if you choose the latter. (Some people prefer to have their longer one-way flight at the beginning of a trip, instead of the end.) With this trans-canal option, you spend a day on the canal, crossing from ocean to ocean and going through the complete lock experience. If having the full "canal experience" is part of your bucket list -- or if you're an engineering geek and don't care too much about shore excursions within Panama itself -- this trip is for you. Most full Panama Canal cruises do call in the Western Caribbean, the Costa Rican ports of Limon (on the Atlantic side) and Puntarenas (on the Pacific), and Cartagena, Colombia.

These sailings call on Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Huatulco and Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. One of the new offerings is the 12-day Panama Canal with Costa Rica and Caribbean itinerary, a roundtrip journey that allows guests to partially transit the Panama Canal. Additionally, they will have the chance to explore the Southern Caribbean, with a late-night stop in Aruba, and an extra visit to either Bonaire or Curacao. This itinerary is perfect for those who wish to experience the Panama Canal transit, immerse themselves in the unique cultures of South and Central America, and visit the Caribbean islands and rainforests. There are several Panama Canal cruise ship options to choose from, and every Princess cruise ship to this region is well-suited for couples and families with children alike. Regardless of whether you choose a Panama Canal shore excursion or a luxurious cruise that stops at some of the liveliest ports, you're bound to make memories and friendships that last a lifetime.

Retrace the steps of 17th-century Spanish colonists with a walk through the well-preserved Old City of Cartagena. The diversity of the cultures you’ll meet in Central and South America is a wonder to behold. Travel by dugout canoe to an Embera village in the heart of Chagres National Park in Fuerte Amador. Visit Fort San Lorenzo, one of the most complete and biggest forts built in Panama.

In Puerto Quetzal, trek up the active Pacaya Volcano and take in panoramic vistas of towering trees, and lush vegetation dotted with exotic orchids. See how Guatemalan coffee is cultivated, harvested, and processed from the seeding of the coffee bean to the preparation of the coffee beverage during a tour of Filadelfia Coffee Estate. Marvel at the surroundings of Lake Atitlan, tucked between impressive volcanoes. Cartagena is a vibrant city that harbors a fascinating and colorful past, and a lively, welcoming present.

The tram climbs 280 feet through the dense jungle vegetation to reach the tree canopy above. During the ride to the top, keep an eye out for local wildlife, including white-faced capuchin and howler monkeys, sloths, butterflies, iguanas, toucans and frogs. For outdoor adventure seekers, it's too wet for hiking in the rainforests, but other activities benefit from the rainy season, including whitewater rafting.

However, as of press time, the four exhibition halls that portray the canal's history, construction, biodiversity and importance are temporarily closed for renovations. Originally known as the Thatcher Ferry Bridge, the Bridge of the Americas connects North and South America and serves as the gateway to the Pacific Ocean. After traveling through the Miraflores Locks, which allow the ship to finish the descent to sea level, you have 8 miles to find a spot on deck, grab a flute of Champagne and get your phone or camera ready. Obviously, a forward location on the ship will give you a clear vantage point as you head into the locks. Even if the canal transit is what you're cruising for, don't forget to check out the rest of the stops on the itinerary. You'll want to consider whether you're more interested in Caribbean islands or Central and South American destinations.

It's a short flight to the islands, or you can travel by ferry to see the whales that are still in the waters around the archipelago after coming to breed in August and September. If traveling earlier in the month, you may also see nesting loggerheads and green turtles southeast of Panama City in Isla Canas (Cane Island) or Bocas del Toro. In addition to visiting Panama, many itineraries include ports of call in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia or Mexico, which can be the highlight of the trip, especially for outdoor enthusiasts. If you are doing a full transit through to the Pacific Ocean side and you're staying in the area, you might want to carve out some time for the Miraflores Visitor Center.
